A city found in Palm Beach County, Boca Raton was incorporated in 1925. The city has a population near 85,000, but many of those with Boca addresses are not actually residing within the Boca Raton municipal borders. The city's daytime population also increases because of the business center the city provides.

Where does the name Boca Raton come from?

The original name for this area of south Florida was "Boca de Ratones", which started to appear on maps in the eighteenth century. It was associated with an inlet found in the Biscayne Bay area.

It wasn't until the nineteenth century that the name was moved north by mistake. The second part of the name, Raton, comes from the Spanish word Ratones, which refers to stony ground at the bottom of a coastal outlet. When put together, the definition of the name "Boca Raton" means a shallow inlet of sharp-pointed rocks.

Boca Raton is known for many things and not all of them are considered good things. In 2004, this area of Florida ended up on the map because of the largest computer crime indictment in United States history committed by resident Scott Levine. However, the city is also known as the headquarters of Office Depot, GEO Group, American Media, FriendFinder Networks, Vitacost, BMI Gaming and Luxury Resorts.

Of course, like many coastal destinations in Florida, Boca Raton is known for the beaches and the great year-round climate. The city is also home to Florida Atlantic University and many notable residents including:

Many other famous celebrities and athletes call Boca Raton home for at least part of the year. This is a popular place for a second home. The city has also been mentioned in a number of films and on many TV shows.
