Open Enrollment: New law allows students to enroll in any public school

As a result of a comprehensive education bill (HB 7029) signed into law this past April 2016, Florida parents will be allowed to enroll their child in any public school in the state. This law will be effective beginning with the 2017-2018 school year.
Caveats are that the new school must have room, the parents must provide transportation and the student cannot be under an expulsion or suspension order. This new provision will also allow high school students to immediately play sports at the new school as long as they don’t play the same sport at two different schools within a school year. This one provision of the law though does worry some coaches as they fear students will only switch for athletic reasons and sport dynasties will be created…
